We found Mandy languishing in a local animal shelter. We do not know if she was an owner surrender or brought in as a stray. She is your basic black dog overlooked by so many people in a shelter environment. With low lit aisle and cages, shelters have a hard time showcasing black dogs. For us, it was hard to miss her beautiful smile and gentile spirit. Mandy is so eager to please. She cowers a bit when you approach her, but you can tell she wants so much to be loved. She basically begs for your attention in the quietest manner possible. It was only after we examined her back at the shelter, that we noticed the hard life Mandy had lead thus far. A vet visit confirmed our fears. The first blow came when Mandy's heartworm test came back positive. And if this wasn't enough, the vet also found healing puncture wounds on her back, scabbing ears from fly bites, missing canine teeth (knocked out in some type of trauma leaving the roots behind) and only a partial tongue. Some people may have turned away at this point and decided this was too much to handle. After all, how could a damaged dog such as this ever be a good family companion. We know better. Mandy will be treated for heartworms, receive the dental surgery she desperately needs and then be placed up for adoption. As the song goes, "Oh Mandy, you came and you gave without taking". But in all honesty, this is not entirely true. Mandy has already stolen our hearts! Won't you help us prove to Mandy that life can be wonderful!
